The sixth Grade Clay Assessment is underway this week. Fairfax County Fine Arts Department designed a lesson to test the students ability to make an abstract sculpture representing items on a planned food menu. The students were to brainstorm what kind of sculpture they would like to see outside a restaurant with the name “Tastes of Nature”.

I thought that the Students turned in AMAZING efforts, this was not an easy project. I’m very impressed with their clay sculpting skills and creative imaginative ideas.

so beautiful An apple, cherries and a slice of pie. Yum! Well Done !

First grade is working on a Spring Flower made of Running Stitiches.

We all recite  ”under, over, pull thru” as we make our way around all the petals of these sweet little flowers.

 Great work First Graders!

A Planning page. Students brainstormed ideas before inserting final names beneath painted circles.

5th Grade is making a very interesting project for the next two classes. I have challenged them, after a discussion about fun paint color names, to come up with a color chart of their own. We looked at several famous paint brands online, and read how they name their colors.  It was so fun saying the name of a color out loud, letting the kids picture it, and then revealing the true hue.

They will work making names, making colors and painting this challenging, fun lesson for two class periods.

FDR’s loyal Scottish Terrier “Fala” is always a crowd favorite, and I knew the classes would like to make a mini “Fala” out of clay.

Happy Dr. Seuss Week!

Posted by: | February 27, 2012 | No Comment |

This week all serious work gets tossed aside for the wonderful fun of making Dr. Seuss themed art full time. Its one of my most favorite times of year, and I enjoy teaching the artists at Haycock how to draw all the fun characters from their Favorite Dr. Seuss books.

Kindergarten made Fox in Socks!

First we drew and cut out the socks. Then we drew the face of the fox, and made a cone nose for him.

We then glued the nose and socks on the paper, and painted his face red.

Mrs. Agrawals students helped me color a Lorax and Truffula Trees!

I taught the Third Grade how to Draw him. We colored it, and took it home.

Horton in Second Grade!
